PERIODONTAL PROPHYLAXIS
Even though a lot of people know symptoms like gum bleeding, unpleasant mouth taste or bad odour, the loosening of teeth or the decrease of the gum from their own experience, not every patient knows exactly, what is meant by the terms gingivitis and periodontitis. Unfortunately advertising gives us the impression that periodontitis can be healed or prevented only by the use of the right product - either by dentifrices or by mouth rinses. However, it is not as easy. To achieve good results, an examination is required to make an accurate diagnosis. The dentist differentiates between the following inflammation forms:
Gingivitis is an acute inflammation of the gum, which is in most cases caused by insufficient dental care. It is usually noticed only by occasional bleeding of the gums and can be healed, if correctly diagnosed and treated.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation and is oftentimes a result of a untreated gingivitis. It damages the periodontium (gum, bone and root-surface of the tooth) thus leading to tooth loss.
Early intervention prevents further decay. Since this disease does not represent an impairment of life quality in its beginning, small warning signs like gum bleeding will often be ignored. Only when visible signs are noticed or in worst case if chewing ability is reduced, the dentist is asked for advice. This, however, is often too late. Similar to cavity prophylaxis, prevention and if necessary, an early intervention are essential to affect the process of the disease in a positive way.
Apart from prevention, where the patient receives all information about how the disease is caused and a professional tooth-cleaning is performed, we compile an individually optimised treatment plan to stop the disease and to re-establish a healthy, aesthetic and functioning condition in your mouth. Your dentist will gladly advise you.
