The frequency of diagnosing cleft lip and palate before birth is increasing with improvements in technology. A cleft lip may be detected in a routine ultrasound. Using advanced molecular genetics occurrence of clefts may be tested. Counseling can help families better prepare for their baby’s needs. Current research continues to investigate how use of multivitamins and folic acid can reduce the chances of cleft.
