Makati Medical Centre Makati Medical Centre is a premium multispecialty hospital in Manila, Philippines. It is a 600-bed hospital where world class treatment is available for all. It has a Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This is headed by the eminent Prof Ted Nicoloff. Residents here deal with a variety of complicated cases daily. Surgical training here include treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cranio-maxillofacial abnormalities. Prof Balaji’s guest lecture at MakatiMed Prof SM Balaji was invited by Prof Ted Nicoloff, Head, Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to MakatiMed. He delivered a special guest lecture on the ‘Management of Craniofacial Clefts.’ Prof SM Balaji’s is one of the leading Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeons in the world today. The Craniofacial Foundation of the Philippines organized this. Also involved were St Jude Hospital and Mary Chiles General Hospital. Prof SM Balaji delved in depth into the subject of Craniofacial Clefts. He has rehabilitated many children with complex craniofacial clefts over a period of 27 years now. Interactive session at the completion of Prof SM Balaji’s lecture The post lecture question and answer session was very interactive. Prof SM Balaji fielded all the questions with aplomb. This had his characteristic mix of brevity and humor. The staff and residents of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery applauded Prof SM Balaji’s lecture. Prof SM Balaji held discussions with Dr Charles P Sia and Dr Ted Nicoloff. They discussed ways to improve delivery of craniofacial treatment to patients throughout Philippines.

FDI Education Committee and ADA Advisory Committee midyear meeting at Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The World Dental Federation The World Dental Federation (FDI) came into being in 1900. It serves as the representative for over a million dentists worldwide. FDI formulates protocol for enabling the advancement of dentistry. It also makes these advancements accessible to dentists worldwide. FDI organizes worldwide campaigns for oral health. These educate people about the importance of oral health. The FDI also upgrades the quality of dental education. It serves to maintain standards of dental institutions around the world. FDI Education Committee Midyear meeting at Cedar Rapids, USA The FDI Education Committee is an elected body of peers. Members have made significant contributions in the field of dental education. They meet at a midyear meeting every year. This is to discuss ways of improving the delivery of dental education worldwide. The Education Committee Midyear Meeting this year was held at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Representatives of the American Dental Association Advisory Committee also attended this year’s meeting. FDI staff was also present at the meeting. Dr SM Balaji provides valuable inputs at the Education Committee meeting The committee meeting chair was Dr. Jurgen Fedderwitz. Vice chair was Dr. Hande Sar Sancakli. Dr. SM Balaji participated in the Education Committee meeting. He proposed innovative ways to enhance dental education worldwide. It particularly included developing countries. Dr. William Cheung, Dr. Hiroyuki Nakano and Dr. Marzena Dominiak were also present. Members of the American Dental Association Advisory Committee also attended the meeting. They included Dr. Roger Macias, Dr. Ken McDougall and Dr. Nanette Tertel. Prof SM Balaji participates in the ICCDE convocation at 40th APDC in Manila Prof SM Balaji attended the 40th Asia Pacific Dental Conference (APDC) in Philippines. SMX Convention Center in Manila, Philippines was the venue for this conference. The Asia Pacific Dental Federation (APDF) organized this conference. Asia Pacific Regional Organization (APRO) cohosted the event. Theme was “Intensifying Professionalism in Synergy with Dental Science and Technology. The International College of Continuing Dental Education (ICCDE) also conducted its convocation here. Prof SM Balaji is Vice-President of the ICCDE. Many new members were inducted into the ICCDE. Discussions held with Prof Tsang, President, ICCDE Prof SM Balaji met with Prof Jeffrey Tsang, President, ICCDE, at the conference. They held discussions over a wide range of topics. Discussions included ways to intensify continuing dental education programs in the region. They also discussed ways to enhance professionalism in the Asia Pacific region. Prof Kathryn Kell, President, FDI, was also a key attendee at the conference. Proceedings at the APDC conference Scientific sessions conducted at the conference were a grand success. Keynote speeches and presentations included a wide variety of topics involving dentistry. All member nations were well represented in all aspects of the conference. The APDF showed robust growth in all spheres. Prof SM Balaji expressed his utmost satisfaction at the growth shown by the APDF.

Prof SM Balaji visited the College of Dentistry, Iowa City, Iowa, USA

Prof David Johnsen, Dean, College of Dentistry, Iowa City invited Prof SM Balaji for a tour of the college. Dr Kathryn Kell, President, FDI, who is an alumnus of the college accompanied Dr SM Balaji. They toured the college and viewed the facilities. The College of Dentistry, Iowa City is an integral part of the University of Iowa. Founded over 125 years ago, it provides advanced dental education. This includes all specialties of dentistry. Dr SM Balaji discussed patient management protocols with Prof Johnsen. Outreach programs available with the college include the award-winning Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit. Dr SM Balaji with Prof David Johnsen, Dean, College of Dentistry, Iowa Prof SM Balaji had extensive interactions with the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Iowa. Dr SM Balaji and Prof David Johnsen also held discussions on many other topics. They included implementation of clinical protocols. These were with regard to helping increasing levels of patient satisfaction. Book presentation at Galagan Auditorium, College of Dentistry, Iowa City Dr SM Balaji presented Prof Johnsen with a copy of “Clinical Cranio-maxillofacial Surgery”. This was at a function held at the Galagan Auditorium. This is a book authored by him. Prof SM Balaji and Prof Kathryn Kell expressed their happiness at their visit to Prof Johnsen, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, College of Dentistry, Iowa.

Alveolar defect grafting with bone graft material

Patient with cleft lip and palate presents for implant surgery The patient is a young man who was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate. He had undergone surgery for cleft repair as an infant. The patient has missing upper left central and lateral incisors at the region of the cleft. He is undergoing concurrent orthodontic treatment for teeth alignment. The patient wanted implants to replace the two missing teeth. A rib graft surgery failed to correct the bony deficiency in the region of the cleft. There was still inadequate bony height for placement of implants. Prof S M Balaji, Cranio-maxillofacial surgeon, decided to augment the bone with Bio-Oss. The patient and his parents were in agreement with the treatment plan. Placement of bone substitute in cleft region for implant Under general anesthesia, a mucogingival flap was first raised. The screw used to fix the rib graft was then removed. Bio-Oss bone substitute was next mixed with blood and compacted into the bony defect. The flap was then sutured closed with interrupted sutures. Treatment planning for implant placement Implant placement would be undertaken once the Bio-Oss has consolidated into solid bone.

Prof SM Balaji visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Chicago at the invitation of the Chairman of the department, Dr Henry C Fung as an observer. Prof SM Balaji is an eminent oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Chennai, India. He has a special interest in cleft lip and palate repair and surgical treatment of syndromic children afflicted with complex craniofacial defects.He travels extensively around the world in a constant quest to keep himself abreast with surgical innovations being practised in the best hospitals worldwide. Dr SM Balaji accompanied Dr Fung and his team of maxillofacial surgery residents during ward rounds. He also met with Dr James Murphy, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and discussed the various oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures performed at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Chicago. Prof SM Balaji also visited the Operating Room as an observer. He observed Dr Henry Fung and Dr James Murphy operate on various Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery cases.

Prof SM Balaji visits the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of Charite Universitatsmedizin Berlin as an observer

Prof SM Balaji visits the Charite Berlin at the personal invitation of Prof Adolphs Prof SM Balaji was invited by Prof Nicolai Adolphs to the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of Charite Universitatsmedizin, Berlin. This was in recognition of Dr SM Balaji’s scientific contributions towards the advancement of cranio-maxillofacial surgery techniques. History of the Charite Berlin The Charite Universitatsmedizin Berlin was founded in 1818. It sustained some damage during World War II and was rebuilt at the end of the war. It was the most prestigious medical center of the German Democratic Republic. It was merged with the Freie Universitat of Berlin in 2003 and has since been one of the largest clinics in the whole of Europe. The Charite today is a premier surgical center for maxillofacial surgery in Germany. Prof SM Balaji views the functioning of the Charite Berlin from close quarters Prof Nikolai Adolphs is an eminent specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He extended a personal invitation to Prof SM Balaji to visit the Charite as an observer. Prof SM Balaji attended the morning briefing session before ward rounds and also accompanied Prof Adolphs and his residents for the morning ward rounds. Prof SM Balaji was also invited into the operating room at the Charite to observe the surgical management protocols employed at the premier center. Prof Adolphs also invited Dr SM Balaji to his room at the Charite and showed him some of the memorabilia he had collected in relation to craniofacial surgery over the course of his distinguished surgical career. Prof SM Balaji attends Interactive Session on SCYLIMIT at Apollo Cancer Hospital, Chennai

Prof SM Balaji invited to Apollo Cancer Institute for SCYLIMIT interactive session The Department of Neurosurgery, Apollo Cancer Institute, Chennai invited Prof SM Balaji. This was for an interactive session on the SCYLIMIT system. The SCYLIMIT system is the brainchild of eminent neurosurgeon, Dr. Takeyoshi Shimoji. He is from Yamanishi, Japan. The Apollo Department of Telemedicine organized this session. Dr. Shimoji is a renowned trigonocephaly expert. He developed the SCYLIMIT system to detect and treat mild trigonocephaly. This was through cranioplasty surgery. Treatment of Mild Trigonocephaly with SCYLIMIT system Mild trigonocephaly results in increased intracranial pressure. This leads to many symptoms. These include language delay, hyperactivity, autistic tendencies, self mutilation and motor delays. The SCYLIMIT system causes no residual morbidity. It results in manifold improvement in the quality of life of the affected patients. There is also no residual postsurgical morbidity. Many doctors attended the session. They included eminent neurosurgeons Dr. Balamurugan and Dr. Samuel J K Abraham.

Prof S M Balaji attends WPATH Symposium at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Prof SM Balaji, a registered member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and an experienced facial feminization surgery expert, was invited by the WPATH to attend the first live surgery symposium of the organization, organized at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA. This symposium was jointly organized by the WPATH, Global Education Initiative (GEI), the Mount Sinai Health System and the American Society of Gender Surgeons (ASGS). WPATH rendering yeomen service to Transgender Health WPATH is a multispecialty organization of healthcare professionals who have made significant investments in their careers towards improving the quality of not just surgical care available to transgender individuals, but also the overall care encompassing the emotional and psychological needs of transgender individuals. Visionaries leading the WPATH for greater inclusiveness of all genders The WPATH is an organization that is lead by visionaries with long ranging goals for the organization. Dr. Gail Knudson is the President of the WPATH and Co-Chair of the GEI. She is also the Founder and former President of the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health (CPATH). Dr. Randi Ettner who is the Secretary of the WPATH, is a clinical and forensic psychologist of international renown. She has been a champion for transgender rights and has served in various committees, which have overseen the reformation of laws pertaining to the rights of transgender people. First Live Surgery Symposium of the WPATH The symposium was held over a period of three days with a wide variety of gender affirmation live surgical demonstrations performed by world leading experts. Dr. Mark Courey who is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Mount Sinai Health System was also present at the course as was Ms. Zil Goldstein who is an assistant professor of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine.
